Oh were they?
Good to know! Maybe it would’ve had a better effect if I’d read ‘em when I was younger.
Thanks for the heads up.
Actually, he isn’t British. His name is Brit.
Like, y’know… Britney.
No really, that’s actually his name.

“Brit” is a comic from the amazing Robert Kirkman about a man that simply can’t be hurt. By anything. Ever.
Or… can he?
Oh yeah, that’s his only ability. Otherwise, he’s got the strength of a normal human being.
Brit is given missions by the Global Defense Agency. Since he’s invulnerable, they’re able to send him out to do whatever they like without risk of losing an agent. He gets tossed into the fire knowing full well that he can’t be burned.
Then one day during a mission he notices some blood coming out of his nose.
Did it belong to the monster that he just crawled out of?
Or is it… his?
Is his invulnerability running out due to his old age? Or is it… something more sinister?
It’s a lot of fun to read and It’s also a great glimpse into the goings-on of Kirkman’s Invincible universe.
If you can dig it up somewhere, do it. It’s pretty rad.
Hopefully it won’t be too hard to find.
‘Til next time!

by Kazuo Umezu

I still haven’t read all of Umezu’s “The Drifting Classroom”, which I sincerely loved.
So when I saw these for sale up on Tales From Another World, I haaaad to get it.
I had to.
When I finally started on these, I was so excited that I wasn’t expecting… to be… disappointed.
To be perfectly sure that I’d read enough to judge it I read all three volumes, cover to cover. There were a few good moments here and there, but overall the read was pretty tame.
It could just be that something was lost in translation, but I’ve read other Japanese horror manga and they genuinely creeped me the heck out. (Especially anything by Junji Ito.)
I don’t know what it is about this one that just doesn’t sit with me. Is it because it’s older? Am I missing something culturally? Something… else?
Whatever it is, I’m pretty bummed about the whole thing.
I wanna go read some Drifting Classroom.
Read it if you want, but don’t expect too much out of it.

Let’s talk Ultimate Spidey. I’ve been wanting to talk about this, but I thought it wasn’t really gonna be fair until a good amount of issues were out.
Issue 4 came out this week. So… let’s get to it.
SPOILERS AHEAD. You have been warned.

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Drawn by Sara Pichelli
First things first- I’m gonna be straight with you guys. I didn’t really pick up Ultimate Spidey until the tail end of it when Pete was just starting to get trained by Cap/Stark/Thor, and when it all went straight to hell for him. (Thanks Levi.)
Ultimate Peter Parker died protecting his family. He was only sixteen.
A few months before that, the uncle of thirteen year old Miles Morales broke into the old OsCorp building and while he was looting the place, a spider crawled into his bag. Obviously this leads towards Miles getting bitten but I’ll spare you the details.
I want people to read this.
I want you to read this.
A great thing about it is that he doesn’t just come out of nowhere. He doesn’t just show up and start kicking butt. Since his books start a few months before Pete dies, the actual death of Spidey affects him. He’s there when Pete dies. He’s there at Pete’s funeral. He feels terrible that he didn’t start helping people sooner, and he wishes that he could’ve helped prevent Pete from dying.
Miles hasn’t really done a whole lot to prove himself just yet, but just by being I can’t help but want more. Seeing him discover his powers, struggle with the fear of being discovered and/or disappointing his father, and ultimately (get it?) assuming the role as webhead…
Just… reading it makes me smile. It’s great. Just great. If there’s anything about it that I could call a downside, it’d be that the issues don’t come out fast enough.
Please, I know everyone loves Pete, but give Miles a shot.
I wasn’t disappointed. Hopefully you won’t be, either.
Bon appetit.

I don’t know what it is, but it’s a struggle to find shounen manga that I really like these days. Even the ones that I did like are kind of… bleh now.
*Ahem* But that’s a topic for a another time.
“Toriko” is a comic about gourmet hunters. They go out into the world and hunt down ferocious and/or deadly creatures that just so happen to be delicious. And it’s even better if they’re prepared correctly.
The manga follows Toriko and his “Krillin”-type buddy Komatsu and their adventures through the dangerous and delicious “Gourmet World”, battling not only ferocious (read: delicious) beasts but also the clandestine “Bishoukukai”- an evil organization intent on controlling the worlds ingredients.
My favorite little thing about it is that it’s a shounen manga that has a progress bar on it. Or it seems like it does, anyways. Many of the main characters in Toriko have a “Full Course Menu”, something they spend their whole lives putting together.
It’s a manga you can really sink your teeth into.
No, really though, reading it makes me really hungry. The food in it looks so darn delicious, it’s almost frustrating. Scratch that, it is frustrating.
I WANT TO EAT SOME GALALAGATOR, DAMN IT
…
*wipes drool*
Er, anyways, check it out sometime.
Bon appetit!

So!
I’ve been pretty quiet as of lately, and I realized that needs fixing.
What’s up in the world of comics?
Feels like a lot of rebooting, lately.
But is any of it interesting? That’s what I’m here for, I guess.
So… let’s do this in the order that I remember them. I’m not even going to name names (y’know, artists and writers or any of that junk), just gonna kinda whiz through them.
Spoilers ahead. This is your last and only warning!
——-
Superman
No red underwear. Huh. Supes was… kind of busy. I know it’s supposed to be a reboot, and things are supposed to be different and junk but it didn’t really feel like I was reading a Superman story. It felt more like a story about The Daily Planet and how mad Superman is that it tanked and got bought out by a their rival newspaper that happens to hate Superman. Clark is mad too, I guess.
—-
Superboy
Retelling of the Superboy story. Looks like he’s still a clone of Supes and Lex Luthor. Right now he’s still kind of locked up in a lab, and some evil organization is planning on using him to attack the Teen Titans. Or… Young Justice? Or whatever the young, fresh hero team is. More exposition than anything else, and that’s fine. It’s still on #1. I’m not immediately hooked but I’ll be patient and sit this one out.
—-
Red Hood and the Outlaws
Okay, if you’re keeping up with comics the internet’s kind of abuzz with how the Starfire in this one has become a soulless… version of her former self. She bangs whoever cos she’s bored and whatever. Yes, these are all issues blah blah blah, but straight up- the actual comic and setup seems really interesting.
It’s not often that they show Jason Todd with any friends, and who better to accompany him than a couple of other “broken” youths? You probably won’t catch me reading this one in public, but I’ll definitely be reading it.

Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
Green Lantern: New Guardians
Red Lanterns
I’m just gonna squash all four of these into one. That’s fair, right? GL’s for Hal, Corps is for John and Guy, and New Guardians is for Kyle. Everybody’s happy. Hal’s gotta get his ring back from Sinestro (who doesn’t even want it), John and Guy have to deal with some unspeakable space-evil, and Kyle…
Well, a bunch of rings abandoned their users in the middle of whatever they were doing because for some reason they all want him. Intriguing.
Oh yeah, there’s a Red Lanterns book. Looks like Atrocitus is having some kind of existential crisis about being a Red Lantern, but of course he’s the leader of the Red Lanterns so he can’t just up and quit.
Bummer.
Overall, doesn’t look like the reboot reallly did anything to change the GL storyline.
Works for me.

Justice League
Hilarious. Just, overall, a lot of fun to read. It looks like the first two supers to meet up in the reboot are Green Lantern and Batman, so we get to see a lot of “man you don’t actually have powers you just talk in a deep voice- wait how did you get my ring” kind of business.
This one’s gold. I hope it stays that way.
—-
Justice League International
It’s the only damn book with Booster Gold in it and that pisses me off. But hey, at least he’s IN something. Some government agency is trying to set up their own little Justice League that they can control that involves supers that represent a bunch of different nations. Fair.
Booster Gold is placed in charge. Huh?!
Good old Booster. He’s proved himself capable in a bunch of previous stories, and kicked some serious butt in Generation Lost.
Good luck, Booster.

Aquaman
I. Love. This. Book.
If I had to single out a favorite of the New 52, it would have to be this one.
I had an idea that I would, after seeing the preview pages that were floating around for a while, but I didn’t realize how dang much fun it was going to be. The look on Aquaman’s face while people are basically just talking down to him is just freaking S-U-P-E-R-B.
Nobody freakin’ takes Aquaman seriously, and I sincerely hope that this reboot fixes that for him.
—-
The Flash
Any complaint I’d have about this book would defeat the purpose of the reboot. You’re kind of tossed into The Flash’s life, mid-date, and the book really just kicks you in the stomach from the get-go.
I can’t wait to read more.
—-
Mister Terrific
For me, Mister Terrific has always kind of been in the background doing his own thing. It’s nice to see him have a book, and even nicer (or… confusing) that reading it was a little more fun than the new Superman book.
“Who the heck is Mister Terrific, anyways?”
Well, it doesn’t really answer that 100% either, but that sort of feels like what it’s going to be.
To be honest, I don’t really see this book lasting very long.
But we’ll see how this goes.
—-
DC Universe Presents
Now, I love Deadman. The concept of an earthbound spirit stuck because he’s gotta make up for what a huge jerk he was delights me. DC’s jerked him around for a long time- finally bringing him back to life right before Brightest Day and ending it by tossing him back into his grave.
I wish he got his own book, but I guess a book like this lets them drop him for other goings-on in the DCU if they ever feel like it.
—-
Blue Beetle
I really like this. But then, Batman: The Brave and the Bold’s put a soft spot for in my heart for Jaime Reyes as the current Blue Beetle. I was pretty bummed when they cancelled his book, so here’s hoping he grabs an audience with this reboot.
—-
Static Shock
I want to like this. Static Shock was a lot of fun to watch, and I’m really glad that he actually has a presence in the DC Universe- but.
It doesn’t really feel like the Static Shock from TV. He ssssssort of is, and he’s kind of being forced into the canon by working at STAR Labs, but it feels like there are a lot of things that are in this book that are missing. For one, his mom’s alive.
For two, where the hell is Richie?
Whatevs. Static, you’ve got two issues left to impress me.
——-
And that’s it for my blah-de-blah on DC’s New 52.
Some of it was fun, some if it I’ll give a few more issues, but overall… most of the ones that I’ve picked up are pretty fun. I look forward to seeing where this is going.
If you have any questions, then aaaaask away.
Bon appetit.

Just posted on my wall by Freddie Mustang.
Curious little story.
Even though it was dark, it still sort of felt like a fond memory.
